The site
The German expression ein roter Faden (literally “a red thread”) refers to a leitmotif, common theme, or connecting strand. By extension, a collection of red threads might be called a red spool (rote Spule) — hence this site’s name.
As for der rote Faden itself, it’s a literary allusion to the British Navy’s old practice of weaving a single red thread amongst the fibers of its ropes. This strand could not be removed without unraveling the entire cord, marking it as crown property, even if cut into smaller pieces. In his novel Elective Affinities, Goethe directly referenced this naval tradition, describing a character’s diary entries as linked by a similar common and identifying red thread.
A more contemporary association might be drawn from that favorite tool of every obsessive investigator on TV: a corkboard of photos and news clippings connected with red string and pushpins. I have no use for conspiracies and their theorists — but if I did fall for one, you can bet I’d construct a whopper of a wall with crimson yarn in abundance.
